What happens to students’ ability to think, judge and create for themselves when generative AI becomes part of learning? Join AI LEARN (UiB) and LOGOS (University of Cambridge) for a one-day workshop to discuss this and related questions.

AI LEARN: The AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (hosted by SLATE, University of Bergen) and LOGOS (University of Cambridge) are convening an in-person workshop to explore how educational institutions are increasingly required to make decisions about generative AI before a mature evidence base exists.

Central to this is the question of how distinctly human capacities for reasoning, judgement, creativity, imagination, and critical reflection are formed and exercised in interaction with AI. Generative AI raises questions not only about what cognitive tasks can be delegated to machines, but also about how engagement with AI may support, constrain, or transform the creative and epistemic capabilities through which people learn, generate ideas, make judgements, and act in the world.

Questions for discussion during the workshop:

• How are the capacities to think, create, and judge well actually formed in an age of AI, and who is responsible for forming them?
• Which human capabilities are foundational to agency in an age of AI, and which need to be developed before cognitive tasks can be meaningfully delegated?
• How can interaction with generative AI support — or constrain — the development of reasoning, judgement, creativity and imagination?
• What forms of guidance, pedagogy and professional judgement enable productive encounters with AI in education?
• What evidence do we currently have, what is missing, and what research is needed to inform educational practice and policy?

Hosts

The workshop is hosted and convened by Dr. Ingunn Johanne Ness (SLATE/AI LEARN, University of Bergen); Dr. Hiwa Målen (SLATE/AI LEARN); Professor Ann Kristin Glenster (LOGOS, University of Cambridge); Dr. Peter Bannister (LOGOS), and Dr. Hilla Tal (LOGOS).

The workshop contributes to AI LEARN’s internationalisation objectives by establishing and strengthening collaboration between the University of Bergen and the University of Cambridge. It is intended to serve as a foundation for a longer-term international research relationship between AI LEARN and LOGOS. The workshop discussions will help identify shared research priorities, evidence gaps, and questions that can inform future research, educational practice, and policy dialogue.
