As we start to prepare for our new national AI centre (AI LEARN), a number of visitors will be visiting the University of Bergen in the coming months. We will hold a series of seminars which will help to raise the profile of UiB as a leading institution for research on empowering human learning with AI. Come join us for An August of AI in Education, a series of seminars that will explore various themes and topics around how AI is impacting education, and how various different institutions are starting to respond to it.
The first seminar is being held by Dr. Jan McLean, Associate Professor from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), entitled "Navigating AI’s Disruption: A Whole-of-System Strategy for Curriculum Transformation and Assessment Reform".

Abstract
This presentation examines how the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is responding to the transformative impact of GenAI on academic integrity, curriculum design, and assessment through a whole-of-system strategy that embeds GenAI into course-wide teaching and learning practices. At the heart of this strategy is a comprehensive curriculum transformation program guided by a “mosaic” approach to assessment— ensuring students are equipped to use GenAI ethically, critically, and effectively, while integrating secure, authentic, and interactive methods across entire programs.
UTS’s approach (available open access) is not only institutionally coordinated but also sector-informed. We have collaborated with other Australian universities and the higher education regulator, TEQSA, contributing to national resources such as the Emerging Practice Toolkit. Our co-developed guide to assessment integrity in the GenAI era outlines principles and propositions for designing assessments that foster ethical and critical engagement with GenAI while maintaining confidence in student learning. The guide is available here.
The session will explore how UTS is implementing these changes through curriculum mapping, professional learning, and strategic alignment— with the aim of ensuring our graduates are prepared to succeed in a GenAI-rich academic and professional landscape.
Bio
Dr. Jan McLean is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Unit at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). She has a career spanning over two decades in leading strategic initiatives related to enhancing learning, curriculum and professional practice with current work focused on guiding the university’s response to the rise of generative AI in education.
Jan has contributed to national discussions on assessment reform in the age of AI, collaborating with the national regulator TEQSA and other academic leaders to rethink how universities assess learning in light of GenAI’s capabilities. Her research focuses on the evolving landscape of higher education and its effects on academic work and learning. Current research is exploring student perspectives on generative AI (GenAI) in education as part of a multi-institutional study.
