During a six-week research stay at SLATE, Research Associate and PhD Candidate Lea Reis, from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), aims to deepen her work on AI literacy through international and interdisciplinary exchange. She will also be holding a SLATE guest lecture on her AI literacy research.
Abstract

Educational fields and discourses are progressively and continuously impacted by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The approaches to and discourse on AI in education can be clustered into AI-related education aiming at the development of competencies in the field (AI Literacy), the use of AI tools in education (AIED), and the development and application of policies, frameworks, and strategies by multiple agents to address both AI literacy and AIED (AI&ED; Holmes et al. 2025).
In her guest lecture, Lea Reis will focus on the first by providing an overview of her research project, a mapping review of the research on AI literacy in higher, continuing, and further education since the publication of Open AI’s ChatGPT. Drawing on a study corpus of 142 publications, her study aims to synthesise and compare definitions, frameworks and pedagogical approaches to foster AI literacy in higher education, as opposed to continuing and further education. Furthermore, points of discussion arising from the study corpus, such as the terminology used or the underrepresentation of studies on fostering AI literacy in continuing and further education, shall be made visible. This overview and comparison are intended to contribute to the discourse on developing AI literacy curricula and pedagogical approaches to support the development of competencies and skills needed in (future) work forces and careers.
Bio
Lea Reis is a research associate and PhD candidate at the Institute for Educational Science, specifically at the Chair of Education focusing on Digitalisation in Higher and Adult Education (Prof. Dr. Svenja Bedenlier) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) since September 2024. She holds an M.A. in Education, with thematic foci on media education and educational technology (EdTech). Her research interests lie at the intersections of (Critical) AI literacy, EdTech, and AIED, with a focus on practical implications for teaching and learning in adult education. In her doctoral research, she therefore explores AI literacy in higher, continuing and further education. Additionally, Lea Reis teaches courses in the B.A. and M.A. Education (Focus: Media Education), as well as M.A. Learning Design programmes at FAU.
