Abstract: What is the next frontier for Learning Analytics dashboards? Much ado has been made about the lack of evidence for their effectiveness in teaching and learning, but many of the studies criticised have been small scale single studies that used only one data source (the LMS).

This webinar is the concluding event of ISILA, an Erasmus+ project that examined how learning-related data from multiple sources can be combined and used to inform pedagogical interventions through learning analytics dashboards (LADs). The project gathered researchers from five European universities, developed and deployed several LADs, and produced significant insights about efficiency and effectiveness of the current LADs for pedagogical interventions in higher education settings. However, the lack of flexibility in the dashboards provided by the tools used in this project has led us to consider how we might move to a more innovative approach in future work. This event will consist of two lightning talks about the result of the project and our plans for using its results at UiB in the next iteration of work, before we move onto a guest lecture from Aneesha Bakharia who will explore possibilities for using GenAI to construct flexible and adaptable dashboards on the fly. Join us for a rapid overview of how dashboards can be designed to more usefully support student learning at scale.
Dr Aneesha Bakharia is based in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Queensland. She began her journey as an electronics engineer before pivoting to a career in educational software development. Her diverse experience spans across the higher education and vocational education sectors, where she has excelled in various technical, innovation project management and learning analytics roles. As an early experimenter with generative AI, Aneesha pioneered the creation of a graphic novel using AI and explored the world of chatbot prompt engineering, demonstrating her commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology.
Dr Jelena Jovanovic is a Professor at the Department of Software Engineering at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. Her current research focus is on the use of computational approaches, including statistical and machine learning methods and techniques, network analysis, and text analytics, towards better understanding and supporting learning, primarily self-regulated learning in higher education settings. She has been in Learning Analytics research for over ten years and is one of the Program Co-Chairs of the two latest editions of the Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) conference (LAK25, LAK26). She will present the results of the ISILA project.
Dr Kirsty Kitto is a Professor at SLATE at the University of Bergen. She has worked in areas spanning Information Retrieval, Cognitive Science, Social Psychology, Educational Data Science, and Learning Analytics. As one of the earliest adopters of the xAPI educational data standard she has worked on problems of data interoperability and student facing LA since 2014, and co-authored a SoLAR position paper on Creating Data for Learning Analytics Ecosystems. She will present on how the Erasmus+ results will inform a future program of work at UiB on flexible student and staff facing LA dashboards.
