The Ministry’s Press Release explained that UiB had been in a tough competition for the funding with the University of Oslo and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.
The Ministry’s over-riding goal is that the Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE) will contribute to building up a research environment in the young and developing field of Learning Sciences that will have both national and international impact.

UiB’s Rector, Dag Rune Olsen welcomed the news. He notes that UiB prioritises learning environment development highly. Vice-Rector, Oddrun Samdal, underlined the strong UiB tradition in high quality learning environment development.
The university will support activity to make learning as effective as possible with 40 million NOK over the next 5 years. SLATE will be a unique university-wide initiative. All 5 University Faculties signed the application for the multi-disciplinary Centre, which will be administratively placed at the Faculty of Psychology.
Professor Barbara Wasson, from the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, will lead SLATE. Associate Professor Astrid Tolo, from the Department of Education, will be the Assistant Director. Jarle Eid, the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology, will lead the administrative management efforts.
