Research impact for social justice- some strategies and examples from the assessment field

Director of the Department of Education at Oxford University Professor Jo-Anne Baird and Dr. Yasmine El Masri from the Oxford University Centre for Educational Assessment (OUCEA) are visiting the Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE) in December and will host a Guest Seminar and discussion. 

At the Guest Seminar, Baird and El Masri will each hold a short talk about: “Research impact for social justice- some strategies and examples from the assessment field”. The seminar will open for discussion over lunch. El Masri's talk will be based on an example: " Using Technology in Science Tasks: Reducing Language Barriers for Syrian Refugees in Lebanon."

Baird is a Professor II at SLATE. She has also been recently appointed Standing Specialist Adviser on Education to the UK House of Commons Select Committee on Education. According to her website, her research interests focus upon assessment systems and recent projects include the effect of examination structures, predictability of examinations, marking quality and the definition of examination standards. She is also an Editor for both Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy & Practice and the Oxford Review of Education.

El Masri is currently working on predicting task difficulty in educational assessments. According to her website, her research interests and areas for student supervision include: item difficulty and demands, language in assessment, science assessments, differential item functioning, Rasch modelling, and international large-scale assessments.

While primarily intended for researchers at SLATE and researchers from the Knowledge, Education and Democracy research group at the Department of Education, the Guest Seminar is open to anyone.
