Every year, the University of Bergen celebrates and marks the winners of this year's Meltzer Prizes in connection with Lauritz Meltzer's birthday on March 8th. Businessman Lauritz Meltzer (1861 – 1943) bequeathed his fortune to a fund, the Meltzer Fund, for the benefit of the University of Bergen. Each year, the fund awards research prizes, funds for research projects and travel grants for researchers.

All prize winners receive NOK 200,000 each.

Two awards are given each year to young researchers. SLATE is proud to announce that during the Meltzer dinner on March 6th 2025, it was announced that one of the Meltzer prizes for young researchers will be awarded to our newly appointed Associate Professor, Mohammad Khalil!

The jury highlights that Khalil is an outstanding research talent with an exceptional work capacity and research that is both impactful and highly relevant.

The jury writes: - His contributions strengthen both the academic and practical understanding of learning analytics and artificial intelligence in education. With his groundbreaking research, which integrates computational approaches with a strong focus on privacy challenges, he has established himself as a leading figure in these important areas, both nationally and internationally.

Mohammad Khalil has also obtained significant funding for his research, including funds through Equinor's Academy Agreement ("Akademiavtalen") for the project Accelerating Privacy and Data Protection Measures Using Synthetic Data Generation (ASPIRE).

From March 1st, 2025, Khalil will take on the role of Vice President of the International Society of Learning Analytics (SoLAR).
