Dr. Ness and Dr. Klykken have recently participated in the European Conference on Games Based Learning, presenting SLATE research on data literacy learning games.
On October 3rd, SLATE Senior Researcher and Theme Leader Dr. Ingunn Johanne Ness and Postdoc Dr. Fride Haram Klykken held an online presentation of a paper during the 18th annual European Conference on Games Based Learning (ECGBL), hosted this year by Aarhus University, Denmark.
The paper is entitled Beyond the Digital: Analogue Games’ Creative Potential in Deepening Data Literacy (2024), and is authored by Ingunn Johanne Ness, Fride Haram Klykken and former Researcher at SLATE, Dr. Rosaline Barendregt, as well as Senior Executive Officer at SLATE, Sofie Steinsund, and Professor Barbara Wasson, Director at SLATE.
The paper is based on a small case study that explores, through a sociocultural lens, how analogue learning games influence creative learning processes in Continuing Education students.

A questionnaire was given to 43 participants enrolled in DIGI610: Fantastic Data, a popular SLATE-led course on Data Literacy. The results show that analogue learning games promote active engagement, foster social interaction, and stimulate innovative thinking connected to the course content when the setting around the activity feels safe for the participants. Participants also expressed that the tactile and social nature of analogue games encouraged more profound group discussions, leading to diverse perspectives and novel ideas.
